In Minecraft, many items are only obtainable from monsters or animals. While some are always dropped, others have only a very small chance. Sometimes you’ll need to defeat hundreds of mobs to collect a single block. Other drops require fairly specific conditions to be dropped by mobs. These aren’t always obvious and are usually explained only through guides like this or the wiki. To make sure you know exactly which mob drops which rare item, we’ve put together a list. We’ll also give you tips on how to increase the odds and improve your luck!

Rare mob drops in Minecraft and drop chances

We consider any item with a drop chance of 10% or less from monsters and animals to be a rare drop. Some are far below that threshold, making them even rarer.

For higher odds, we recommend a sword with the Looting enchantment, ideally at level III for full effect. This can boost your luck, but it doesn’t work for every drop. We’ll show you exactly where you can squeeze out more percentage points—and where you can’t.

Minecraft Looting III on a sword increases rare mob drops

Rabbit drops in Minecraft: Rabbit’s Feet for potions

Rabbit’s Feet are a rare resource that not every player has found. On one hand, hunting rabbits isn’t exactly fun, and on the other, they only have a 10% chance to drop. With Looting III, you can raise that to 19%. Rabbit’s Feet aren’t especially practical, but you can brew Potions of Leaping from them. You can also use them to tame zombified camels.

Witch drops in Minecraft: Random potion on death

Witches combine randomness with conditions. They can drop one of four potions—but only if they drink it shortly before dying. And only if you or one of your tamed wolves kills them. On top of that, the chance is only 8.5% (with Looting III up to 11.5%). You can get either a Potion of Healing, Fire Resistance, Swiftness, or Water Breathing.

Fish in Minecraft: Bone meal and Java vs. Bedrock differences

Fish have an interesting difference between Bedrock and Java. In Bedrock, they have a 25% chance to drop a bone, while in Java you can only get bone meal 5% of the time. Not very lucrative and not hugely useful, but still a fun fact. In Java, Looting does not increase this chance—but that’s probably fine. Bone meal has many other, much better sources.

Farming Wither Skeleton skulls: Three heads for the Wither fight

Drops from Wither Skeletons are much more exciting, as they can drop their skulls, which you need to summon the Wither. You need three in total—a real undertaking. The skull has only a 3% chance to drop (with Looting III up to 5.5%) per kill. There is a way to push that to 100% though: a charged creeper. That’s much trickier to pull off.

Zombie drops in Minecraft: Iron, carrots, and potatoes

Zombies and Husks have surprisingly varied drops. Besides Rotten Flesh, they have a 0.83% chance (with Looting III up to 1.83%) to drop either an Iron Ingot, Carrots, or Potatoes. They also have drops tied to specific conditions. You’ll get a Red Mushroom if they’re riding a Zombie Horse, a Rabbit’s Foot if they’re riding a zombified camel, or the music disc “Lava Chicken” if a baby zombie is riding a chicken.

Guardian drops in Ocean Monuments: Rare fish and conditions

Guardians—found only in Ocean Monuments—may have the strangest and rarest drops. Alongside Prismarine Shards and Cod, other fish are much rarer. If you land the killing blow on a Guardian yourself, it can also drop other fish: Salmon at 0.62% (with Looting III up to 1.38%), Pufferfish at 0.33% (with Looting III up to 0.71%), or Tropical Fish at 0.05% (with Looting III up to 0.11%). These are among the rarest mob drops in the game.

Conditional mob drops in Minecraft and how to trigger them

Beyond pure percentages, some items only drop under certain conditions on death. We’ve already covered a few, but others are even more unique. For many of these, lightning is key—which you can summon with a trident enchanted with Channeling.

Minecraft trident with Channeling summons lightning and activates charged creepers

Turtle drops in Minecraft: Bowl from a lightning strike

Turtles normally drop only Seagrass. If, however, they are struck and killed by lightning, they always drop a Bowl. Possibly one of the oddest items—something not everyone knows.

Collecting mob heads: Charged creeper for 100% drops

We already mentioned this with Wither Skeletons, but it also applies to Zombies, Skeletons, Creepers, and Piglins. A creeper struck by lightning becomes charged and glows blue. If that charged creeper kills any of the mobs listed, they will drop their head 100% of the time. With the exception of Wither Skeleton Skulls, these heads are purely decorative—perfect for showing off.

Farming creeper music discs: Skeleton arrow as the trigger

Sticking with creepers—this time they’re the target. If a creeper is killed by a skeleton’s arrow, it drops a music disc. We’ve already covered which discs and how to farm them efficiently in this guide: (Minecraft Records: All Locations & How to Build an Automatic Farm) . Collecting all music CDs is a great goal—and quite a challenge.

Panda drops in Minecraft: Slimeballs as an extremely rare phenomenon

Pandas can drop Slimeballs, but not when you kill them. The conditions here are very specific: first, you must find a weak or a baby panda. They sneeze from time to time and have a 1 in 700 chance (about 0.0014%) to drop a Slimeball when they do. Not the best source of Slimeballs, but among the rarest mob-item drops of all.

Conclusion: Efficiently farming rare drops in Minecraft

Use Looting to increase your odds for rare drops. This is especially important for things like Wither Skeleton Skulls, but other items can matter, too. For example, Zombies can drop useful crops if you don’t find a village or prefer to play without one. Other rare items have much more complicated requirements. You can still collect music discs with a farm, but controlling lightning is impossible without a trident and a thunderstorm.
